Position Summary

PLEASE NOTE: This position is for the UNM Gallup Branch, located in Gallup, NM, approximately 138 miles west of Albuquerque, NM.

The University of New Mexico Gallup Branch Adult Basic Education (ABE) program is seeking a Tutor. The selected candidate will:

  • Provide academic tutoring services to a wide variety of individuals or in scheduled groups throughout a diverse student body.
  • Create and implement tutorial programs and classes that guide and assist students with problem solving, literacy, numeracy, verbal and social skills, and test preparation.
  • Administer testing instruments and writes individual tutoring plans upon review of textbooks; refer students to other agencies as appropriate.
  • Facilitate reading and writing labs to develop writing, math, word processing, study, and other academic skills.
  • Lead and trains entry level tutors in strategies to accommodate alternative learning styles and disabilities.
  • Maintain and updates confidential files and records, ensuring the ethical and legal guidelines are maintained.
  • Research and select learning materials, textbooks, software, and equipment to facilitate tutoring; may design specific handout, study, and related materials.
  • Serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
  • Participate in the overall operations of the Adult Education Program.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of full-time college; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Experience in classroom management and lesson planning.
  • Bilingual (Navajo/English, Zuni/English, or Spanish/English) skills preferred.
  • Experience coordinating or providing tutoring services to at-risk student population.
  • Experience serving a culturally diverse student population, with a demonstrated ability to relate to and support underrepresented students.
