Position Summary

This position will be located in the College of Arts and Sciences BA/MD Program office. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive advisement/counseling to the current undergraduate BA/MD students, from entrance to transition to the UNM School of Medicine. This position incorporates student services and affairs components to offer holistic guidance to enhance the students' experience in a rigorous four-year degree program (degree requirements, time management, organization, emotional support, etc.). This position is unique in that there is supplemental administrative work in addition to student advisement. This would include Program committee membership, active participation in program development and initiatives, requested reports, etc.

  • Reviews student files to ensure deadlines are met for completing undergraduate graduation requirements such as transcript analysis of transfer, AP, IB, and UNM credit of how applies toward program/degree requirements, coursework requirements, MCAT examinations, and other specific SOM requirements
  • Meets with current students at least once per semester (pre-registration advisement does not count) to update major/minor, degree plan, request transcripts, update hold status, experiential activities such as international or national study abroad planning, and discuss anything affecting their experience (work schedule, academic support, family/friend relationships, financial support, organization, etc.)
  • Reviews student mid-semester progress and final grade reports each semester to determine student promotion, status in program such as academic probation, program release, etc. based on academic regulations of the Program; works one-on-one with students to help them return to regular status after sufficient progress is made
  • Provides assistance regarding student development and retention; develop methods for analysis and presentation of data; and prepares summary analyses, evaluative reports, and recommendations
  • Report academic performance of students including semester grades, GPAs, standardized test scores (ACT, SAT, MCAT, etc.) to various groups within and connected to the program
  • Represent the A&S office at various meetings (in and outside of the Program), presenting at Program events (Foundations of Science Learning Academy, Preview Day, BA/MD Orientation, Graduation, etc.)
  • Participate and assist in event planning/hosting of student events, lectures, activities, this includes up to 10 events and 2 - 8 student meetings per academic year. This position typically leads and/or coordinates with team for student support programming such as Foundations of Science Learning Academy, First Year Friday, BA/MD Wellness Initiative, and Faculty Mentorship Program
  • Assist in the development of program publications (BA/MD Incoming Student Guide, HMHV in UNM Catalog, BA/MD Student Handbook, website, event flyers, graduation program, magazines, etc.)
  • Participates in continuous in-service training related to academic information and advisement procedures
  • Participates in occasional evening and weekend activities/events

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with degree matriculation
  • Experience with retention of a diverse student population (i.e. high-achieving, educationally disadvantaged, from rural and urban backgrounds)
  • Expertise in pre-medical advisement such as the SOM admission course pre-requisites and Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
  • Experience with compiling and analyzing reports relating to student academic performance
  • Proficiency in programs related to advisory duties: Banner, Loboweb, My Reports, Lobo Achieve 2.0, and Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written communication skills demonstrated by specific requirements addressed in the Cover Letter
