Position Summary

Under the close supervision, guidance and mentor ship of professional staff and/or faculty within a specified operating unit of the University, undertakes a range of on-going activities and assigned projects of significant complexity requiring specialized knowledge of a technical, operational, professional, or research area. Receives training and mentoring from senior professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments. This is a fixed-term (typically up to 12 months) position that is restricted to individuals who are currently enrolled in high school or have obtained a high school diploma no greater than 24 months prior to hire date.

High school academic intern to study the elastic properties of mantle minerals. The selected candidate will be expected to:

  • Work in Dr. Jin Zhang's high-pressure laser spectroscopy laboratory with a focus on mineral sample preparation and spectroscopy measurements under ambient conditions.
  • Conduct literature searches,
  • Write scientific abstracts,
  • Prepare research presentations and
  • Present scientific results.

Assignment Details:

Days & Hours: Monday- Friday 8-5pm (May set hours between 8-5pm)

Anticipated Start Date: 6/24/19

Projected End Date: 6/23/20

Parking Arrangements: Responsibility of the selected employee

Conditions of Employment
  • Must be age 16 or older at date of hire; must be in the care of a parent or guardian if under the age of 18.
Minimum Qualifications

Currently enrolled in high school or must have obtained high school diploma no greater than 24 months prior to hire date.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong record of academic performance of science and mathematics courses
  • Ability to use standard office computer software
  • Willingness to learn scientific software.
  • Minority or female students who have taken Earth science andphysics classes are preferred.
Additional Requirementslocal high school students who have taken and pass at least 1 semester of science classes.
