The SA+P seeks applicants for the next Academic Operations Officer (AOO) to join leadership in shaping initiatives and responses to the many exciting challenges and opportunities involving the School, institution and State. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, the Academic Operations Officer serves as a part of the central leadership team, and the position will participate with the Dean and internal management in strategic and operational planning, decision-making, and short and long-term accreditation efforts.

The individual will have oversight of all administrative staff and functions within the School ensuring compliance with University policies and procedures; is responsible for space management and building coordination for 3 buildings (Pearl Hall, Predock Center for Research and Design, and Predock House); serves as liaison on internal and external communication and problem resolution; and, performs a variety of other duties as assigned. An understanding and guidance of student administration activities and service as well as general support to all Dean's Office initiatives and efforts is required. The ideal candidate will have successful prior experience in most of the key areas of responsibility for this position, as demonstrated in the resume and cover letter required in the application. The School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) at the University of New Mexico delivers high-quality instruction, diverse course offerings, active research programs, and enriching professional development opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. The SA+P is the only institution of higher education in the state of New Mexico that offers the professional accredited degree programs in Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture. The School has a Fall 2024 enrollment of over 500 undergraduate and graduate students in its three departments: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Community and Regional Planning. The School offers a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Planning and Design, Master of Architecture, Master of Science in Architecture, Master of Landscape Architecture, and Master of Community and Regional Planning as well as the Historic Preservation and Regionalism Graduate Certificate and the Urban Innovation Graduate Certificate. The SA+P also houses the Indigenous Design and Planning Institute and the Design and Planning Assistance Center.

The SA+P represents a creative, vibrant, academically engaged and culturally diverse community of faculty scholars and students. The SA+P has 27 full-time faculty, 24 part-time faculty and 17 staff. The SA+P is currently managing multiple externally funded grants, has dedicated alumni, and fosters economic development for the state of New Mexico.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a field related to the job duties described.
  • Experience as an operations manager or equivalent, reporting to a CEO, Chair of a department or equivalent.
  • Exceptional written communication skills as demonstrated by the cover letter and resume.
  • Advanced ability to think critically an analyze information and situations.
  • Experience working and interacting with leadership teams in decision-making and problem solving.
  • Considerable experience managing and prioritizing multiple parallel activities.
  • Considerable experience directing and organizing large academic functions.
  • Advanced Human Resource experience to include policy/guidance/law interpretation, recruitment, hiring, disciplinary actions, timekeeping, and advising and coordinating search committees.
  • General knowledge of immigration procedures, including specific knowledge of DS-2019's, J-1, H-1B visa requirements for foreign nationals.
  • Considerable supervisory experience including performance management and teambuilding.
  • Experience with mediation and conflict resolution; facilitation and negotiation; and employee development and mentoring.
  • Experience providing facilities and resource management.
  • General knowledge of accounting in higher education, to include pre- and post-award administration.
  • Knowledge of Banner and HR Reports and My Report (or a similar HR reporting system)
  • Knowledge of finance roles, policies, procedures and ability to serve as a liaison between departments and financial staff on a variety of matters.
