One of the nation's finest anthropology museums, the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology offers exhibits and programs relating to cultures around the world, with a special emphasis on the cultural heritage of the Southwest. The Maxwell offers to visitors an opportunity to experience the richness of human life-ways in all their diverse expressions, providing a setting for both education and employment unique in our state.

The Maxwell Museum is seeking an outstanding individual to provide accounting services and expertise in the following areas: Advanced, multifaceted accounting and related functions in such areas as ledger maintenance and analysis, cost and/or financial analysis, fund reconciliation and monitoring of accounts, journal voucher postings, labor distributions, purchasing transactions, physical asset inventory control, and museum gift store inventory and tax accounting.

The Accountant I will also be responsible for several sponsored projects (i.e., Contracts and Grants), which will require the ability to gather Principal Investigators on various budget and financial process requirements. Knowledge of UNM policies and procedures will be critical in this position.

Conditions of Employment
  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 9 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; no previous experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications


  • BA in Accounting or Finance
  • At least 3+ years Accounting experience and demonstrated ability in creating budgets and monitoring/analyzing fiscal operations
  • Proficient in MS Excel to analyze/interpret financial data and prepare financial reports
  • Experience working in Chrome, Lobo Mart, Banner and MyReports (or similar financial systems) and preparing financial reports
  • Knowledge of standard and/or fund accounting principles, methods and applications
  • Knowledge of Restricted accounting (sponsored projects)
  • Ability to communicate effectively at different levels of organization
  • Ability to initiate various accounting transactions (Journal Entries, labor distribution)
  • Retail sales and/or Tax accounting
  • Property accounting
  • Inventory management
