Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Bursar’s Office is part of the Financial Services Division and includes both Student Accounting and the Cashier Department. It serves the entire University, including main, branch, and HSC campuses with the primary focus on customer service. Student Accounting is responsible for tuition and fee assessment, processing of all electronic and hard-copy statements, refunding of financial aid, reconciliation of loan funds, assisting students with questions concerning their accounts and the collection of outstanding debt. Over $181 million in tuition and fee revenue is processed through this office. Additionally, approximately 63,000 financial aid refunds totaling over $93 million are processed. The Bursar's Office is held to high standards of confidentiality under FERPA, as well as UNM policy, U.S. military policies surrounding grants, IRS, and numerous other agencies, governmental and private.

The department seeks an energetic, professional, highly-skilled accountant to serve as Accountant 2, with primary duties that include but not limited to the processing of excess financial aid for reimbursements and other account refunds, processing student account adjustments, processing of Title IV refunds and return of funds, analyzing and preparing monthly account reconciliations for assigned loans using a variety of systems, preparing journal entries, analyzing and providing customer service to students, parents, retirees and other departments within the university regarding inquiries about billing statements, financial aid refunds, account breakdowns, and/or other information requested related to their UNM Bursar account transactions. Secondary duties will include the process of drawdowns for direct loans, serve as chair for the tuition appeals committee, assist in auditing projects as needed by internal and external auditors and agencies, proxy to input timesheet data and secondary contact for MarketPlace. The successful candidate will be responsible for all student refunds processed through the Bursars Office, maintaining the payment plans and ensuring communication in regards to payment plans is updated on our ecommerce system, adhere to daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual deadlines. The position requires an in-depth understanding of all aspects of the Bursar’s Office and the Banner Student Accounts Receivable system.

In addition to experience in fiscal operations, the successful candidate will display a commitment to customer service, able to work across entities and operational units, effective communications, time management and able to adapt to and manage change while maintaining fiscal effectiveness.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

  • Using broad based computer applications, software packages, LAN, web, etc.
  • Using MS Access databases for analysis and reporting
  • Using MS Excel spreadsheets for analysis and reporting
  • Using MS PowerPoint to create visual presentations
  • Making presentations to large groups of people
  • Using Banner or a similar integrated ERP system
  • Working in a team environment, either as a member or as a leader

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of FERPA
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures, applicable local, state, and federal regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritize work assignments
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
