Position Summary

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular is looking for a highly motivated, self-directed individual to join our team. The Department has nine faculty and three lecturers. It is a research-active academic department and requires an Accountant II to assist with a wide variety of accounting functions and administrative processes.

The successful candidate must have effective interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills and possess the ability to multi-task and prioritize daily duties and projects. Applicants should have the knowledge and the ability to interpret UNM policies and procedures for faculty and staff, develop accounting processes, analyze revenue and expenditure trends, and recommend appropriate budget levels and forecasts. The qualified candidate will be responsible for managing funds, including monitoring and monthly reconciliation of indexes, preparing, and updating monthly financial statements and projection reports, and processing financial transactions such as labor redistributions, journal vouchers, non-standard payments, and requisitions. The ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter with a strong accounting background in both unrestricted and sponsored projects accounting (i.e., Contracts and Grants).

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred

  • Previous experience with UNM related systems such as Banner and MyReports.
  • Familiarity with UNM accounting policies and procedures, including labor distributions, journal vouchers, non-standard payments, and requisitions.
  • Experience with UNM categorization of reserves, mid-year projections, and annual budget processes.
  • Ability to research, collect, analyze, compile data, and develop financial reports.
  • Proficiency in using Excel to illustrate routine financial reports.
  • Budget development, budget monitoring, and forecasting.
  • Experience with restricted and unrestricted accounting.
  • Experience with balancing and reconciling accounts.
  • Knowledge of sponsored projects.
