Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Health Science Center, Department of Pediatrics seeks an individual who has strong supervisory skills and advanced knowledge and experience in both unrestricted and Contract/Grant accounting, to join our accounting team. The Department of Pediatrics is a large clinical department consisting of approximately 140 faculty, 370 staff, and 18 divisions. The Accountant 3 position will supervise and oversee the accounting group’s day-to-day accounting operations, researching and problem-solving budget, procurement, fund, and expenditure issues for a fast-paced department. In accordance with Division Chiefs/Faculty, Department Management and the accounting team, this position will participate in division budget and financial meetings and will fiscally oversee our most financially complex division. The preferred candidate will be a self-starter, highly motivated with exceptional interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to establish priorities and complete projects on time. Being a team player, demonstrating excellent verbal/written communication skills, and having the ability to work independently as well as overseeing the work of others is essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Supervision of accounting personnel, to include recommendations for hiring, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution.
  2. Accountant to one of our largest and most complex specialty divisions that consists of restricted and unrestricted accounting. Preparation of monthly grant and contract reconciliations and reporting, effort certifications, and grant closeouts.
  3. Primary consultant and accounting oversight to an off-site pediatric division to include budget review, ensure accounting deadlines are met, monthly net-margin review, monitor gains and categorization of reserve, and communicating accounting updates.
  4. Primary Department Accounting specialist and resource for day-to-day financial transactions and tactical issue resolution for team such as UNM policy, procedures, and department standardization for both restricted and unrestricted transactions.
  5. Interprets and analyzes accountants’ monthly salary and transaction reconciliation to ensure high-level oversight.
  6. Ensures accuracy, completeness and University compliance over Pediatric divisions monthly financial statements.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of Direct Supervisory experience
  • Experience with Grant & Contract Accounting and Research Administration in an academic, non-profit, or higher education environment
  • Experience with reconciling, analyzing and reporting
  • Experience preparing financial projections and budgeting
  • Experience with Federal and State government Procurement Policies
  • Experience with writing Standard Operating Procedures and Business Practices
