Position Summary

The Department of Pathology is seeking an Accountant 3 to collaborate with department leadership in managing the financial and operational functions of a clinical department with significant research funding and an annual operating budget exceeding $18 million.

This position oversees accounting activities, supports operations, and guides and supervises staff responsible for day‑to‑day financial and procurement functions. The position collaborates with department leadership by synthesizing financial and clinical data to provide actionable recommendations that inform strategic and operational decision‑making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, analyze, and report on financial and clinical data from multiple sources and revenue categories.
  • Provide actionable recommendations to department leadership based on financial and operational trends.
  • Prepare standard and ad‑hoc financial reports and dashboards.
  • Track clinical revenue streams, including patient billing, consultations, and clinical contracts.
  • Monitor, reconcile, and close out accounts; audit financial activity for accuracy and compliance.
  • Oversee payroll labor distributions and correct discrepancies as needed.
  • Communicate financial and operational information clearly to a variety of end users, including non‑financial audiences.
  • Maintain data systems and support database management activities.
  • Coordinate multiple projects and tasks, ensuring accuracy and timely completion.
  • Develop and deliver training for departmental staff; will supervise and provide guidance to staff

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Financial Management
  • Experience with automated financial, accounting, and reporting systems such as Banner, MyReports, HR Reports, and other UNM applications.
  • Experience tracking clinical revenues, preparing budgets and financial reports, reconciling accounts, and managing departmental ledgers.
  • Experience performing advanced accounting functions, financial/operational analyses, and financial projections.
  • Experience with grant and contract (fund) accounting.
  • Knowledge of UNM policies and procedures, accounting standards, and UNM Medical Group (UNMMG) procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Experience providing training, guidance, and supervision to a variety of internal groups and departmental partners.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
