Position Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Accounting Manager to oversee financial operations, ensure sound accounting compliance and processes, and support strategic financial decision-making across our academic, research, and clinical functions. This role plays a key part in optimizing the department’s financial performance through budgeting and financial reporting, clinical productivity analysis, and clinical revenue cycle management.

As one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine, Pediatrics operates with a $79 million annual budget across multiple funding sources, including unrestricted and restricted funds. The department consists of 18 divisions and employs over 500 faculty and staff, dedicated to excellence in education, research, and patient care.

Position Overview

The Accounting Manager leads two critical financial teams-Accounting/Budgeting and Clinical Practice Management -ensuring strong financial procedures and tools for monitoring and analyzing data, development and implementation of processes, and compliance with institutional policies or funding agency requirements. This position interfaces with senior administration, faculty, staff, institutional business partners and external agencies to drive financial success and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee departmental financial operations, including budgeting, financial forecasting, analysis, reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with various policies, financial controls, and accounting standards.
  • Oversee key clinical revenue cycle functions that include analyzing clinical productivity (wRVUs) and revenue cycle trends, partnering with clinicians and leaders to optimize financial performance, and acting as the liaison group for Pediatric provider credentialing.
  • Lead and mentor a team of 10 financial professionals across accounting and clinical revenue management.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop strategic financial initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, cost savings, and revenue maximization.
  • Serve as a financial advisor to the Department Administrator, Department Chair, and leadership team, and faculty and staff at all levels.

The Accounting Manager reports directly to the Department Administrator and collaborates closely with the Department Chair, senior leadership and other key administrative roles in the department and institution.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree successful completion of at least 15 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Leadership & Team Management: 5+ years of experience leading an accounting team, including hiring, performance reviews, and mentorship.
  • Financial Oversight & Strategy: Expertise in financial reporting, decision-making, and strategic planning, including contract and grant management in an academic or healthcare setting. Strong focus on precision in financial management.
  • Data Analysis & Reporting: Proficiency in various systems or tools across financial Enterprise platforms, Excel, or modeling tools for researching, collecting, analyzing, and compiling financial data for management reports and business planning.
  • Clinical Revenue Cycle Oversight: Understanding of the stages of the clinical revenue cycle and provider productivity metrics (wRVU - work relative value unit), familiarity with EMR (electronic medical record), coding, billing/collections processes.
  • Financial Education & Collaboration: Ability to educate non-financial partners on department policies, financials, and key performance indicators.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Outstanding communicator and strategic thinker with the ability to build trust and foster collaboration across leadership, faculty, and staff.
  • Process Improvement & Change Management: Proven experience in driving process improvements and managing organizational change.
