American Archive of Public Broadcasting

This project is a collaboration between New Mexico PBS/KNME, KUNM, KANW, KENW, KRWG and the American Archive of Public Broadcasting. The American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) is a collaboration between the Library of Congress and the WGBH Educational Foundation to coordinate a national effort to preserve at-risk public media before its content is lost to posterity and provide a central web portal for access to the unique programming that public stations have aired over the past 70 years. To date, over 50,000 hours of television and radio programming contributed by more than 120 public media organizations and archives across the United States have been digitized for long-term preservation and access. The entire collection is available on location at WGBH and the Library of Congress, and more than 45,000 programs are available online at americanarchive.org.

Project Summary:
The New Mexico Public Media Digitization Project, funded by the Council on Library and Information Resources, supports the digitization, preservation and public access of 8,668 tapes comprising 5,934 hours of historic programming created by New Mexico PBS/KNME, KUNM, KANW, KENW and KRWG. Through the project, tapes will be inventoried and sent to a third-party vendor for digitization. Digital files will be shipped to the partner stations, the Library of Congress, and WGBH. The Library of Congress will preserve copies for posterity, and WGBH will manage public access to the collection.

Project Management:
Reporting to the Executive Producer, Arts and Cultural Affairs at New Mexico PBS, the Archivist will manage and execute an ambitious digitization project. The Archivist will be responsible for overseeing contractor/vendor and project collaborator work related to the project, manage the workflows including shipping of tapes to and from the vendor, inventorying, cataloging, and coordination with the AAPB team at the Library of Congress and WGBH. The Archivist will assist the AAPB Team in curating exhibits and/or special collections, in consultation with staff at the partner stations. The Archivist will coordinate with other departments and colleagues at New Mexico PBS and the partner stations as necessary, including communications staff and legal counsel.
