Position Summary

Under the leadership of the Director for Residence Life and Student Housing at the University of New Mexico and the immediate supervision of the Residence Life Manager, the Area Coordinator is a full-time (12­ month) live-in professional who plays an integral role in the department's function. The position requires a call­back response after regular business hours.

As RLSH aims to enhance residents' educational, social, and personal growth, the Area Coordinator helps create conditions within the residence halls that allow a diverse student population to learn and live in a comfortable, non-threatening environment.


The duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Directly supervises between 2 and 3 professional Hall Coordinators and 1-2 Student Hall Coordinator; and oversees an area of approximately three buildings and 25 paraprofessional Resident Advisors.
  • Oversees an area of assignment with approximately 700 residents.
  • Directs social and educational programming initiatives.
  • Facilitates student mentorship and leadership development.
  • Adjudicates high-level residential student conduct cases.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by supervisory staff members or that arise in meeting the needs of the students, community, or University.
  • Responsible for one additional area to meet the needs of the department, which is: Training, Development, Selection, Student Leadership & Programming, or Conduct & Care

Conditions of Employment
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience living in on-campus housing.
  • Demonstrated desire to positively influence students' lives and create a positive community conducive to academic success.
  • Proven excellence in organizational skills, sensitivity to a diverse student population, and the ability to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff.
Additional Requirements- The position requires call­back response after regular business hours to respond to non­standard situations.- This position will require a pre­employment criminal background check.
