Position Summary

TheDepartment of Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies at the UNM Collegeof Education invites applications for a tenure track Assistant or AssociateProfessor of Bilingual Education beginning August 2020.

The UNMCollege of Education, comprised of five academic departments is afuture-oriented, dynamic professional school organized to reflect the followingvalues: Advocacy, Building Professional Identities, Collaboration, buildingstrong School/University Partnerships, Diversity and Social Justice,Interdisciplinary Inquiry/Scholarship and Teaching and Learning.

TheDepartment of Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies offers an MA degreeconcentration in Bilingual Education and TESOL, and the opportunity fordoctoral studies with focused studies in bilingualism, bilingual education, andbiliteracy. Bilingual faculty also work collaboratively with faculty in theDepartment of Teacher Education, Educational Leadership and Policy to providecoursework and guidance for teacher preparation and professional developmentfor experienced teachers. Collaboration with the Department of Linguistics andthe Department of Spanish and Portuguese also exist.

Thesuccessful candidate will be expected to teachgraduate and undergraduate level classes in bilingual education (PreK-12) andmulticultural/diversity courses. The candidate must be qualified to teachcourses in Spanish. In addition, the chosen candidate will display asignificant record of research and publications in these fields and willcontinue to be a productive scholar in these areas. The individual willparticipate in the refinement and/or development of the Bilingual/TESOL programin collaboration with other program faculty at UNM and across the state. Thechosen candidate will direct the Summer Spanish Immersion Institute forBilingual Teachers. This person will collaborate with Spanish-speakingcommunities of the Southwest and international communities and institutions. Inaddition, the chosen candidate will advise both domestic and internationalgraduate students, mentor students in scholarly activities, serve oncomprehensive exam and dissertation committees and participate in all programand department activities.

Qualifications

MinimumQualifications

  • An earned doctorate in bilingualism, bilingual education,biliteracy, or related fields by August 2020.
  • At least three years of Pre-K-12 teaching experience in U.S.bilingual settings or in accredited schools in Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Scholarly evidence of bilinguality and biliteracy in Spanish andEnglish.
  • Ability to teach relevant undergraduate and graduate level coursesin Spanish.

PreferredQualifications

  • Demonstratedqualifications and record of scholarly work equivalent to the rank of AssociateProfessor
  • Potential or evidence of excellence in scholarly research inbilingualism and publications in Spanish and English.
  • Robust and current formal academic preparation/advanced study inbilingualism, biliteracy, and/or bilingual education.
  • Evidence of a research focus on cultural and linguistic variationas situated in multi-lingual and multi-cultural communities.
  • Ability to teach relevant undergraduate and graduate level coursesin Spanish.
  • Excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses inbilingual education, including face-to-face and online environments.
  • Interest in and commitment to collaborate with SouthwestSpanish-speaking communities.
  • Experience in Pre-K-12 public school teaching in bilingualsettings.
  • Excellence in professional development programs in Pre-K-12 publicschool bilingual settings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, andstudent success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
