Position Summary

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will contribute to research, teaching and academic life in the department and will have expertise in Climate Change Studies.

Candidates should be capable of teaching courses in multiple areas within our curriculum, and of supporting M.S. and Ph.D. students in research projects that may range from environmental resource management to Geographic Information Science, while maintaining an active research agenda related to understanding climate change. We are searching for someone who works at the intersection of climate change science and human responses to climate change impacts. In particular, research should address ramifications of climate impacts on human populations, which may include adaptation, migration, and marginalization. Salary is competitive and based on experience. Applicants who are appointed to a UNM continuing faculty position are required to provide an official certification of successful completion of all Ph.D. degree requirements prior to their initial appointment with UNM.

The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant department whose faculty teach and research across the breadth of geography and environmental studies. We provide innovative curricular programs that are relevant to current, real-world problems, and that are strongly coupled with our individual research expertise. We enjoy a variety of collaborative partnerships with other units and scholars across campus. Our new PhD program, launched in 2019, is a joint effort with the Department of Geography at New Mexico State University. Qualifications

Minimum qualifications: This position requires a Ph.D. in Geography or a related field to be completed by July 1, 2020, and the ability to join the UNM faculty in Fall 2020.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong applications will demonstrate evidence of: (1) an active research agenda that addresses ramifications of climate impacts on human populations, which may include adaptation, migration, and marginalization along lines of class, race, gender, sexuality, nationality, or other factors; (2) methodological capabilities in political ecology, environmental policy, climate science, water resources management, human geography, physical geography, and/or mixed-methods approaches to geospatial analysis; (3) regional expertise that complements departmental and university strengths in Latin America and the U.S. Southwest; (4) experience in undergraduate and graduate teaching; (5) the capacity to advise and direct graduate students; and (6) a demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and student success as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
