Position Summary
The University of New Mexico is seeking a tenure-track music faculty member to serve as the Director of the UNM Music Prep School (MPS) and String Lab School (SLS) community music programs. This Assistant Professor will provide vision for, and administration of, these community music programs.
Duties will include overseeing daily operations, supervision of staff, budget management and scheduling. This will also include working in coordination with the UNM Foundation to maintain donor relationships, developing and maintaining marketing materials, and pursuing grant opportunities. The successful candidate will design and develop curricula in the MPS and SLS to enhance the
educational offerings in these community music programs. This faculty member will also teach courses in music based on the expertise of the candidate and as appropriate to the needs of the department. It is expected that this faculty member will engage in active recruiting efforts on behalf of the department, and will collaborate with existing faculty in an effort to integrate the
MPS and SLS more fully into the activities of the Department of Music. This faculty member will also engage actively with the larger arts and music education community in New Mexico and will develop and maintain a strong research/creative activity profile.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Master’s degree in Music, Music Education, Education, Arts Administration, or related field
required by August 2024.
2. Minimum three years of elementary, middle school and/or high school music teaching
experience or commensurate educational experience in a community arts organization

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Doctorate in Music, Music Education, Education, Arts Administration, or related field.
2. Two or more years university-level teaching experience in the capacity of graduate assistant
or above.
3. High-level expertise (pedagogical knowledge, musicianship, and scholarship) in music
education.
4. A demonstrated background in employee and/or volunteer administration and/or
management of a community arts organization.
5. Five or more years of elementary, middle and/or high school music teaching experience or
commensurate educational experience in a community arts organization.
6. Strong oral and written communication, organizational and administrative skills.
7. Vision to create and ability to execute recruiting initiatives.
8. Creative specialization in one or more of the following areas: community music programs,
string pedagogy, elementary music, assessment, psychology, differentiation and exceptional
learners, technology, vernacular music, mariachi, or creativity.
9. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student access, as well as
working with broadly diverse communities.
10. Continued commitment to scholarship and a vision for future creative work.
11. Demonstrated experience in grant application writing and/or securing donor or other funding

This statement should also describe the candidate’s past demonstrated actions that have promoted these values.Semi-finalists will be asked to participate in a phone or video interview.Finalists will be invited for an on-campus interview with the Search Committee, the Chair of the Department of Music, and the Dean of the College of Fine Arts. Finalists will teach a music education class in the department of music and teach a community music class. The candidatewill give a presentation/lecture/workshop showcasing their current or developing research and/orcreative work. The candidate will also participate in meetings with UNM faculty, staff and students. All criteria for applications must be submitted electronically.
