Position Summary

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) atthe University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time, tenure-trackAssistant Professor position in Hydrology with a start date as early as January2026. We seek candidates with research expertise in any area of hydrology,including but not limited to hydrogeology, water quality, surface water/groundwater interactions, or hydroclimatology. This position offers an excitingopportunity to advance hydrological research with a focus on the unique waterand climate dynamics of arid and semi-arid regions. Applicants must have a PhDin Hydrology, Geoscience, or a related field by date of appointment. For bestconsideration, all application materials must be received by July 14, 2025.

The successful candidate is expected to develop an externallyfunded research program that addresses critical hydrological challenges as outlinedby the National Academies of Science and Engineering. Their research will contributeto addressing grand challenges in water science at UNM by participating in interdisciplinaryinitiatives such as the ARID Institute, the Water Resources Program, and collaborationswith other departments on campus. Wewelcome candidates with expertise that complements existing departmentalstrengths in geochemistry, geophysics, and climate. The Department of Earth andPlanetary Sciences has a full-time tenured/tenure track faculty of 13 andoffers undergraduate degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences and EnvironmentalScience, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences. EPSfacilities include state-of-the-art analytical laboratories for waterchemistry, stable isotopes, and environmental monitoring, as well as access tohigh-performance computing facilities and field sites across New Mexico'sdiverse hydrogeologic settings.

The new faculty member will be expected to teachundergraduate and graduate courses in hydrology and related areas,incorporating modern computational approaches and data-driven methodologiesinto the curriculum. They are also expected to supervise master and doctoralstudents, and contribute to core, required undergraduate courses. The positionoffers opportunities to collaborate with researchers across UNM and at nearbynational laboratories, as well as state and federal agencies.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: The minimum qualifications must be consistent with Higher Learning Commission standards and compliant with the faculty hiring guidelines.

  • Ph.D. in Hydrology, Geoscience, or related field by start date of appointment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
  • Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals in hydrology or related fields
  • Demonstrated commitment to establish a vigorous, externally-funded research program in hydrology
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
