Position Summary

TheDepartment of Math and Statistics anticipates the appointment of an AssistantProfessor in Applied Mathematics beginning August 2024. Minimum qualificationsinclude a Ph.D. in appliedmathematics, mathematics, statistics, or a related field by the appointmentstart date.

The Department seeks candidates pursuingfundamental research in all areas of applied mathematics, such as, but notlimited to, numerical analysis, optimization, scientific computing, machinelearning, applied and asymptotic analysis, dynamical systems, and mathematicalstatistics. Preference will be given to candidates whose work has significantapplications in the biological, engineering, or physical sciences and who can fosterties with other units on campus and with local national laboratories andindustries. The Department's current strengths in applied mathematics include numericalanalysis, high performance computing, nonlinear waves, continuum and fluiddynamics, biological modeling, uncertainty quantification, multigrid methods,electromagnetics, and classical relativity.

Albuquerquehas a rich heritage and boasts a vibrant scientific environment that providesmany opportunities for research collaborations and funding. UNM houses theCenter for Advanced Research Computing, the Center for Quantum Information andControl, and the Center for High Technology Materials, among others, and it isnear Sandia National Laboratories, Kirtland’s Air Force Research Laboratory,and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in appliedmathematics, mathematics, statistics, or a related field by the appointmentstart date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Anindependent research program and an emerging national/international reputation,or in the case of junior candidates, expectation of such.
  • Commitmentto teaching and service, and the expectation of excellence in teaching;potential for mentoring graduate students; interest in undergraduate mathematicseducation.
  • Expectedcontributions to research in areas of interest to the Department and ability tohelp expand the group's interactions with other departments and/or locallaboratories and industry.
  • Researchinterests motivated by scientific problems.
  • Demonstratedcommitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well asworking with broadly diverse communities.
