Position Summary

The Health Education (HED) program at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for a assistant professor position in Health Education faculty position beginning in the fall of the 2019-2020 academic year. The successful candidate will have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. in Community Health Education, Public Health or a related field by the starting date of the appointment. We are seeking a candidate whose demonstrated research agenda integrates into and complements the current research of faculty in the Health Education program (health disparities, health justice, health promotion, and disease prevention).

UNM is the state’s flagship research university as well as a Hispanic-Serving Institution classified a Carnegie Research University with Highest Research Activity. UNM also has strong connections with 23 tribal nations located within New Mexico. As such, successful candidates must be committed to working with broadly diverse student and community populations.

The successful candidate must show evidence of research or other scholarly activity in the community/public health field and demonstrate evidence of involvement in professional service. We prefer that the candidates’ scholarship have a strong health behavior methodology that clearly translates to the community. Candidates will be expected to provide service to the Department, College, University, and their respective field. Candidates must have a commitment to providing high-quality undergraduate and graduate education and demonstrated ability to teach courses related to health disparities/health equity to students from diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students. Preference will be given to those who have experience in the design and delivery of undergraduate online instruction. Courses to be considered include program planning of public health interventions, program evaluation, social determinants of health, and quantitative research methods.

The successful candidate will be expected to assume a 2/1 teaching load for the first two years and then resume a full teaching load of a 2/2 thereafter. Teaching loads may be divided among lower division, upper division and graduate level course offerings. Advising loads will be required and include advising at the master's level only.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Community Health Education, Public Health or closely
    related field by August 2019;
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in program planning, program evaluation and/or research methodology related to community/public health.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses with diverse populations in the areas of: Multicultural health education, program planning, program evaluation, health behavior theory and quantitative research methods;
  • Experience with designing and successfully teaching online courses;
  • Demonstrated record of publications and presentations; potential for obtaining external funding, and; able to establish an agenda of active research in the area of community/public health;
  • Ability to advise and direct graduate work;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and student success, and working with diverse populations.
