AssistantProfessor Position in Special Education Teacher Preparation and Inclusive Practices (Dual LicenseProgram)
Starting in August 2026

The University of NewMexico, College of Education and Human Sciences, Department of SpecialEducation, invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor positionin the undergraduate Dual License program with expertise in the area of specialeducation teacher preparation and inclusive practices. This UNM faculty memberwill extend the teaching, research, and service mission of the SpecialEducation Department.

Responsibilities 
Thesuccessful candidate will be expected to (a) supervise students in fieldplacements, (b) teach courses specific to the preparation of special educatorsto serve the diverse needs of students with disabilities, and (c) conductscholarly work relevant to the preparation of pre- and in-service educators towork with preK-12 students with disabilities in inclusive settings. The facultymember will collaborate with colleagues in the Special Education Department andassist with the coordination of the Dual License program. This will includeinvolvement in the recruitment and evaluation of potential cooperating teachersand collaborative decision making regarding the placement of teachercandidates, updating program participants’ progress, and ongoing collaborationwith our program partners in conjunction with the Special Education Departmentfaculty. We are especially interested in a candidate who cancontribute to the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico through theirteaching, research, and service. Successful candidates must be committed toworking in the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Terminal degree in Special Education or a closely related field by August 14, 2026.
  2. Minimum three years’ experience teaching students with a wide range of special education needs.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  1. Robust and current formal academic preparation in the education of pre- and in-service educators to work with preK-12 students with disabilities in inclusive settings.
  2. Thorough formal preparation and current involvement in research activities, such that the successful candidate will be able to establish an agenda of active research relevant to the preparation of pre- and in-service educators to work with preK-12 students with disabilities in inclusive settings.
  3. Extensive preK-12 teaching experience working with students with a wide range of special education needs in inclusive settings.
  4. Excellence or potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate licensure courses.
  5. Potential for excellence in supervision of teacher candidates.
  6. Evidence of successful collaborations across multiple communities.
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  8. A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
