Position Summary

TheUniversity of New Mexico-Valencia Campus is accepting applications for an AssistantProfessor of Spanish, which is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-trackposition. The position begins August 2025.

Locatedabout 30 miles south of Albuquerque in rural Valencia County, the University ofNew Mexico-Valencia Campus is a two-year branch community college associatedwith the University of New Mexico. With an emphasis on teaching excellence,Valencia Campus offers vocational and technical courses as well as academictransfer courses to the citizens of Valencia and northern Socorro counties. Thefaculty and staff serve a student body of approximately 2,300 each semester.

Summaryof duties and responsibilities: Provide 12 credit hours of classroom instructionper semester primarily in first-year Spanish. Course load may alsoinclude 100 and 200-level Spanish courses, such as Heritage Spanish. Otherresponsibilities include maintaining student records, posting and maintainingoffice hours as well as participating in curriculum development, outcomesassessment, college committees, professional development, departmentalprojects, and college/community service.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Spanish or a closely related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Spanish
  • At least one year of experience teaching Spanish language classes at the college level.
  • Documented success in language instruction

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree (PhD) or ABD (all but dissertation) in Spanish or a closely related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in Spanish
  • Minimum of two years successful experience teaching Spanish language classes at the college level
  • One year of successful experience teaching Spanish at a two-year campus or community college
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current teaching methodologies, second language acquisition pedagogies (including for New Mexican Heritage speakers of Spanish), curriculum development, and/or assessment
  • Demonstrated professional development, such as attending or presenting at workshops or conferences, or scholarly work (related to pedagogy or discipline
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, accessibility, inclusion, linguistic diversity, and diverse student populations, including first-generation college students, low-socioeconomic students, and racially minoritized students

    We will offer reimbursement for travel expenses to all candidates who are invited to the UNM Valencia campus, who accept the offer of an interview, and who must incur long-distance travel expenses. The travel reimbursement will follow UNM policy and be no more than $750.
