Position Summary

The University of New Mexico National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine at the UNM School of Medicine are seeking early career population scientists with expertise in population-based molecular and/or genetic epidemiology to expand programmatic efforts in cancer control and population science in New Mexico. We invite applications for tenure track positions at all academic ranks. The selected candidate(s) will establish extramurally funded research programs and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across multiple scientific and clinical oncology disciplines. We are seeking epidemiologists working in the areas of biomarkers of risk and prognosis, genomics, epigenetics, gene-environment interactions, genetic ancestry and genetic risk assessment on a population basis. Numerous opportunities are available for translating laboratory-based approaches to improvements in screening, diagnosis and treatment of several cancers for which New Mexican’s suffer health disparities. Preference will be given to candidates whose research incorporates biological specimens and employs and develops laboratory-based genetic/genomic measures of risk. Experience with collecting and integrating biomarkers, genomics/genetics, patient electronic health records and population-based research data to address health disparities is highly desirable. Options are available to have a wet laboratory. The UNMCCC has substantial opportunities for energetic multidisciplinary collaborations in a highly collegial environment with potential for growth. The UNMCCC houses or has close links to many resources including the NCI SEER New Mexico Tumor Registry, New Mexico Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Pap Registry, ORIEN, the Center for Native American Environmental Health Equity, the Clinical and Translational Science Center, and several UNMCCC Shared Resources and National Centers. These exceptional resources enable cutting-edge cancer prevention and control research. Significant resources, including excellent salaries, comprehensive start-up packages, and endowed positions, are available. Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with accomplishments.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. The 134 oncology physicians, 122 cancer research scientists, and staff are particularly focused on discovering the causes and the cures for cancers that disproportionately affect the people of the American Southwest - primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White - with strikingly different patterns of cancer incidence, mortality and disparity. The Center treated 12,000 unique patients in FY17, 15% of whom participated in therapeutic interventional studies and 35% of whom participated in interventional studies. The UNMCCC has outstanding research programs in Cancer Control and Cancer Health Disparities; Cancer Genetics, Epigenetics, and Genomics; Cancer Cell and Systems Biology; and Cancer Therapeutics. These programs house several national centers including: The Molecular Discovery and High Throughput Target Screening Center (, one of the nation’s 6 Chemical Biology Consortium Centers of Excellence in The NCI NExT Program; The New Mexico Center for the Spatiotemporal Modeling of Cell Signaling (, one of 13 NIH National Centers for Systems Biology; and a NIH Clinical and Translational Sciences Center. Rich collaborations with UNMCCC partners (Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories; Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute) with unparalleled computing and technology infrastructure enrich our research endeavors. Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in epidemiology or related field
  • Postdoctoral training in molecular or genetic epidemiology in populations
  • A track record of relevant scholarly achievement, including peer-reviewed funding and high quality publications focused on cancer, and
  • Eligible to work in the United States,as this in not a J-1 visa opportunity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest or expertise in cancer disparities research, and
  • Expertise in primary data collection with human populations, and
  • Laboratory-based biomarker, genetic/genomic methods related to cancer in humans.
  • Experience applying molecular or genetic epidemiologic methods to the study of cancer will be considered.
