The Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering (CCEE), in the School of Engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor faculty position in Wildfire Impacts on Natural and Built Environments to join our growing department, starting in Fall 2024.

The CCEE Department has a vision to accelerate its continuing excellence in research and education over the next 10 years that includes the hiring of future leaders in civil, construction, and environmental engineering. The successful candidate will contribute to the research and teaching mission of the Department, which currently has 17 faculty members, several research professors, 250 undergraduate students, and 90 graduate students. The Department is experiencing strong growth in research expenditures (approximately $10 million in 2022). The Department is housed in the Centennial Engineering Center, which contains state-of-the-art civil engineering laboratories. Located in the heart of the arid Southwest, UNM has an outstanding portfolio of expertise across campus that seeks to address the critical needs of communities struggling with climate-related issues including wildfires. Important contributors to these efforts include research centers within the Department: the Center for Water and the Environment (an NSF CREST Center), the UNM Resilience Institute, and the Southwest Environmental Finance Center. The University also collaborates closely with nearby national research laboratories including Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the Air Force Research Lab.

Candidates with research interests in wildfire impacts on natural and built environments are invited to apply. Areas of interest include but are not limited to wildfire impacts on flooding, water resources, and debris flow hydrology; natural and engineered mitigation and recovery strategies; impacts on transportation, housing, utility systems, and community services; resilience in wildfire-impacted systems; or other topics related to wildfires in natural and built environments.

To qualify, candidates must have a Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field by the appointment date. Applicants will be evaluated on these preferred qualifications: (1) their ability to develop an externally funded research program in the focus area described above that complements existing Department strengths and leads to collaboration inside and outside the Department; (2) commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and ability to teach core and advanced water resources engineering, hydrology or construction engineering and management; (3) demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, student success, and working broadly with diverse communities; and (4) registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or commitment to pursue PE registration.

Minimum Qualifications: The minimum qualifications must be consistent with Higher Learning Commission standards and compliant with the faculty hiring guidelines.

• Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), or plans to pursue PE registration
