Position Summary

The Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position to join our Department in Fall 2025.

We are seeking to recruit a colleague interested in contributing to the research, teaching, and outreach missions of the CCEE Department, which currently has 17 tenure-track and tenured faculty members, several lecturers and research professors, 250 undergraduate students, and 90 graduate students. Our Department has a vibrant research program ($12 million expenditures in 2023), with key projects being led by the Center for Water and the Environment (https://cwe.unm.edu), including the Southwest Environmental Finance Center (https://swefc.unm.edu/home/). UNM has created strategic teams and made significant investments to help address the needs of communities facing climate-related issues, water scarcity, and increased high-quality water demands. Significant contributors to these efforts include faculty and students across campus collaborating within the Accelerating Resilience Innovations in Drylands (ARID) Institute (https://arid.unm.edu), and with nearby national research laboratories (i.e., Sandia and Los Alamos), and state and federal agencies including the US Bureau of Reclamation, US Geological Survey, US Army Corps of Engineers, Southern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Control Authority, Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority, Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, and the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District.

We welcome applications from innovative and collaborative colleagues with research and teaching interests in hydrology and water resources engineering. Key areas of interest include, but are not limited to the coupling of hydrologic processes with human and natural systems (e.g., ecosystem processes, food-energy-water systems, socio-ecohydrological systems), hydrologic responses to changes in human and natural systems (e.g., climate change, land use and land cover, wildfires, water management), hydrologic-based solutions to provide clean water for people and ecosystems (e.g., restoration, environmental flows, urban and non-urban solutions to water quality and quantity), and water interactions with material and living components of natural and built environments (e.g., water-centered preparation and response to natural disasters, impact of water infrastructure on human and natural systems). The semiarid climate of New Mexico offers unique opportunities for creative, multi-scale research projects exploring the discovery, development, validation, and adoption of transformative solutions to tackle problems associated with water resources in xeric, mesic, and even hydric environments (e.g. testbeds and validations of technologies and methodologies under lower-flow, higher-sediment conditions). We welcome applications from candidates conducting observational, experimental, theoretical, or modeling work, and encourage them to describe how their work can strengthen our Department, and vice versa.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • To qualify, candidates must have a Ph.D. in civil engineering, hydrology, water resources engineering or science, or a closely related field by August 2025

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to develop an externally funded research program in the focus areas described above that complements existing Department strengths and leads to collaboration inside and outside the Department.

  • Commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and ability to teach core and advanced courses in hydrology and water resources engineering.

  • A demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, and working with diverse communities.

  • Commitment to student success inside and outside the classroom.
