Position Summary

The Department of Sociology at the Universityof New Mexico invites applications for an Assistant Professor position to beginin August 2020. For this full-time, tenure-track position we seek applicationsfrom scholars of social movements or movement-relevant political sociology.Applicants must have a conferred PhD in sociology or a related field by date ofappointment. Applications must demonstrate evidence of an emerging independent research agenda that engages key debates and/or makes theoretical, empirical, or methodological innovations in the literature on social movements or political sociology. The new faculty member will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in social movements, supervise masters and doctoral students (including comprehensive exams), and contribute to core, required undergraduate and graduate courses. As specified in the ad, preferred qualifications for the position are: a) Evidence of an active research agenda and publication history focused on social movements or political sociology; b) Evidence of emerging independent research that engages key debates and/or contributes to theoretical, empirical, or methodological innovations in one of those fields; c) Academic preparation and ability to teach undergraduate courses in social movements or political sociology as well as contribute to core courses in the undergraduate program; d) Ability to teach the required comprehensive graduate-level course in social movements; capacity to supervise comprehensive doctoral examinations in social movements and political sociology; e) A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, including experience working with broadly diverse communities; f) A research agenda that overlaps with at least one other area of emphasis at UNM: medical sociology, race/ethnicity, criminology, and sociology of Latin America.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

· PhD in sociology or a related field by date of appointment (August 1, 2020)

· Evidence of primary specialization in social movements or political sociology

Preferred Qualifications:

· Evidence of an active research agenda and publication history focused on social movements or political sociology

· Evidence of emerging independent research that engages key debates and/or contributes to theoretical, empirical, or methodological innovations in one of those fields

· Academic preparation and ability to teach undergraduate courses in social movements or political sociology as well as contribute to core courses in the undergraduate program

· Ability to teach the required comprehensive graduate-level course in social movements; capacity to supervise comprehensive doctoral examinations in social movements and political sociology

· A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, including experience working with broadly diverse communities

· A research agenda that overlaps with at least one other area of emphasis in the department or at UNM: medical sociology, race/ethnicity, criminology, and sociology of Latin America
