Position Summary

The Department of Speech & Hearing Sciences at the University of New Mexico is conducting a search for an Assistant Professor. This is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, with a start date of August 12, 2019. Responsibilities include conducting a research program consistent with the candidate’s area of expertise, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring students, and performing service duties as assigned by the Speech and Hearing Sciences Department Chairperson. This is a probationary appointment leading to a tenure decision.

UNM is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Albuquerque is a delightfully eclectic, medium-sized city with many of the advantages of urban life and is full of cultural richness and creativity. It provides a low cost of living in a beautiful desert and mountain biome. UNM holds a "Highest Research Activity" Carnegie Classification, includes a research and teaching hospital, and is designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. The department has a collegial relationship with UNM’s Department of Special Education as well as UNM’s Center for Developmental Disabilities, local Head Start programs, and community agencies, clinics, and hospitals. The department also collaborates with Albuquerque Public Schools, which is among the top 40 largest school districts in the nation serving nearly 84,000 students. Senior faculty within the department provide mentoring to maximize research success.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Doctorate in Communication Sciences and Disorders or a related field prior to start date of appointment

  • Qualified to teach communication disorders courses as specified by CAA accreditation standards

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Specialization in child speech and/or child language

  • Specialization in bi/multilingualism

  • Evidence of a strong research potential

  • Evidence of excellence in teaching potential

  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and student success, and ability to work with diverse communities
