Position Summary

The University of New Mexico, a leading research university with a nationally recognized academic health center, is seeking an experienced corporate attorney to provide legal counsel to the institution that will cover a broad range of higher education and other legal issues. Areas of practice will include complex corporate transactions and contract review, higher education compliance, policy review, real estate transactions, intellectual property, purchasing matters and providing training to University departments and personnel as needed.

This position will report to the Chief Legal Counsel and will entail working with all areas of the University, mid-level and senior university officials as well as faculty/academic leaders.

Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced environment where advice and counsel leads to client-oriented solutions. This position requires interaction with a variety of university constituents and the successful candidate must be able to build relationships and inspire confidence.

Conditions of Employment
  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Successful candidate who is not a member of the NM State Bar is required to obtain a temporary Public Employee Limited License issued by the NM Supreme Court.
  • Must become a member of the NM State Bar no later than one (1) year after date of hire.
Minimum Qualifications

J.D. or L.L.B; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certifications/License: Member of NM State Bar, or member in good standing of the State Bar of another state or district of Columbia.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working onbehalf of an institution of higher education or agovernmental or public entity with educational and/or researchmissions is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of currentand developing legal issues and trends in area of expertise.
  • Willingness to learnand work in new or unfamiliar subject areas.
  • Ability to interpretstatutes, policies and other legal documents, and communicate thecontent of those documents to clients within the University and outsidecounsel.
  • Excellent verbal andwritten communications skills, including the ability to persuade andinfluence a broad spectrum of constituents at all levels.
  • Strong communication skills,good professional comportment and ability to interact with high levelexecutives and administrators, and accrediting agencies.
  • Ability to workon multiple projects independently and simultaneously.
  • A high levelof computer literacy and comfort withelectronic mail, word-processing programs, spreadsheets, desktoppublishing, and document databases.
  • Strong peopleleadership and management skills.
