Position Summary

The Associate University Counsel provides comprehensivelegal counsel, strategic risk management, and operational support across theUNM Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC). This position will serve as the transactional counsel, involving drafting, reviewing, and negotiating UNM contracts andinterpreting UNM Policy, FERPA, EMTALA, and anti-kickback requirements. This rolespans healthcare law, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, commercialcontracts, and research integrity. Additionally, this role also includes various othertasks, including UNM Leadership and Governance support, support of the clinical delivery system, UNM clinical on-callsupport, Patient Financial Services support, and occasional Main Campussupport.

Applicants must be and remain licensed as an attorney, ingood standing, by the Supreme Court of New Mexico, or licensed as an attorneyby and in good standing with the highest court of another state and eligible topractice law pursuant to the limited license provisions set forth in Section15-301.1 NMRA.

Conditions of Employment
  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Successful candidate who is not a member of the NM State Bar is required to obtain a temporary Public Employee Limited License issued by the NM Supreme Court.
  • Must become a member of the NM State Bar no later than one (1) year after date of hire.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

J.D. or L.L.B; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certifications/License: Member of NM State Bar, or member in good standing of the State Bar of another state or district of Columbia.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • JD from an accredited law school and licensed in good standing in New Mexico
  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare law (or corporate law), either in-house or at a law firm. 
  • Strong knowledge of federal health regulations, including HIPPA, Anti-Kickback, FERPA, and EMTALA as well as higher education laws
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts relating to federal health regulations (HIPAA, Anti-Kickback, FERPA, EMTALA).
