Position Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director of CTL, the Associate Director oversees all student service programs at the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS) as well as the Graduate Resource Center: The Learning Strategies Program, the Math & Science Tutoring Program, the Online Tutoring Program, the Supplemental Instruction Program, the Writing & Language Center, and the Graduate Resource Center. CAPS/GRC enhances the academic success of University of New Mexico students by providing peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, and workshops covering a variety of academic issues. CAPS/GRC provides opportunities for academic conversations in which students engage CAPS/GRC peer tutors and UNM faculty in critical thinking throughout their educational careers. Tutoring interactions span a variety of formats and learning environments to meet individual student needs. CAPS/GRC helps both student users and CAPS/GRC student employees develop diverse strategies and skills to achieve their academic and professional goals.

Under indirect supervision, the Associate Director will:

Oversee all CAPS/GRC services, providing alignment between these programs and maintaining a high level of programmatic excellence; Ensure implementation of CAPS/GRC mission in accordance with each program’s vision; Supervise the team of five professional staff members who directly coordinate each of CAPS/GRC’s student service programs, leading this group in developing and implementing student service initiatives; Manage CAPS/GRC’s program assessments; Participate in overarching CAPS/GRC fiscal management, program innovations, and strategic planning; Promote/facilitate productive communication among the various components of CAPS/GRC; Foster collaborations with UNM, New Mexico, and national communities that revolve around quality services for the UNM student population; Participate in local and national conversations on effective learning assistance programming, peer-facilitated learning, and persistence and graduation efforts, engaging in the scholarly community of learning theory and practice; Serve on university committees and task forces; Develop and articulate policies to allow a large department to efficiently serve students and oversee student employees; Act as primary line of communications with partner programs; Seek out and implement tools and practices to align the center with the state of the field in peer tutoring; Remain abreast of programmatic changes across all academic units and departments, in order to align CAPS/GRC services with the UNM curriculum.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified; two of which are management level experience.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A doctorate and knowledge of educational research
  • Record of strong teaching in a university setting
  • Knowledge of practices that enhance equity, inclusion, and diversity
  • Knowledge of the scholarship of teaching and learning or scientific teaching
  • Excellent presentation, writing, and collaboration skills
  • Experience in writing grant proposals
  • Knowledge of program development and assessment
  • Experience with online teaching and educational technology
  • Experience managing a diverse staff
