Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Schoolof Engineering (SOE) has an opening for a Director of Integrative Engineeringat the rank of Associate or Full Professor. This position is a full-time, 9-month,faculty position. The desired start date is August 2025.

The faculty member will holdtenure in one of SOE’s six departments and develop and grow a bachelor’sprogram in Integrative Engineering (pending state approval) as well as anintegrative approach to our First-Year Engineering academic curriculum, workingclosely with all departments and our Engineering Student Success Center. The IntegrativeEngineering bachelor’s program is envisioned as a flexible, convergent,transdisciplinary degree rooted in engineering, centered around design, andreaching toward other disciplines that pique students’ interest, from managementto the arts and much more. We have already developed and piloted atransdisciplinary, project-based, first-year engineering course, which weintend to expand, providing a common, integrative first-year experience thatengages, prepares, and retains students within the School of Engineering.Additional course offerings for first-year students may include those focusedon engineering applications of mathematics; programming, data, and AI; anddesign challenges in a variety of disciplines that address the great problemsof our day, from climate and the energy transition to engineering in worldhealth.
The position's faculty rankand salary are negotiable based on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:


The successful candidate willbalance teaching, research, and service and direct the Integrative Engineeringbachelor’s program, including expanding the integrative engineering offerings andreducing inequities in enrollment. This colleague will work in close partnershipwith University College, the Engineering Student Success Center, SOEleadership, and all SOE departments. Research agenda should include engineeringeducation research related to equitable student success, rooted in frameworksthat promote justice, equity, accessibility, diversity, and inclusion (JEADI).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in engineering, engineering education, or a related field
  • Experience commensurate with that of a tenured professor at the Associate or Full rank in any of the School's six departments (Chemical & Biological Engineering, Civil, construction, & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • · Demonstrated commitment to engineering education research or closely related field, including STEM education research, student success, and innovative curriculum pathways.

    · Demonstrated excellence in scholarly teaching and commitment to teaching an integrative bachelor’s engineering program including a common first-year course and design courses.

    · Leadership and demonstrated success in program development aligned with School and University strategic plans, and a record of innovation in transdisciplinary, integrative, or sociotechnical engineering education, promoting student success and innovative curriculum pathways

    · Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including working with staff and faculty across roles and backgrounds.

  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
