Position Summary

The University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine is seeking outstanding applicants for the position of Chair of the Department of Pathology in the School of Medicine in the Health Sciences Center (HSC). The Chair will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Department's education, research, and clinical service missions. The ideal candidate is expected to have a record of successful development of educational programs and training of students and fellows, a history of extramurally-funded projects, demonstrated excellence in clinical service and experience in the management of complex diagnostic pathology enterprises. Moreover, the successful candidate will have practical administrative, fiscal and budgetary skills, and fundraising experience. Prior recognized investment in faculty development and mentoring is essential. Also critical are the abilities to effectively function as a consensus builder and to influence and collaborate across various stakeholders. The candidate must demonstrate exceptional professionalism and interpersonal skills. The Chair will need to be an advocate for diversity and inclusion initiatives and embrace and appreciate the diverse state cultures. The University of New Mexico co-sponsors, with Presbyterian Healthcare Services, a non-profit comprehensive specialty reference laboratory, TriCore Reference Laboratories ( www.tricore.org). TriCore provides diagnostic services for the University of New Mexico hospitals, the NCI-designated UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Presbyterian Healthcare Services, as well as much of the state of New Mexico with regional and national consultation services. TriCore is one of the largest clinical laboratories in the United States.

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the "Land of Enchantment." In addition to a reputation as a leading research-oriented medical center we are known for our innovations in medical education, being at the forefront of student-based learning. The 70-member Department of Pathology consistently ranks among the top academic departments of Pathology in the United States for NIH funding. Opportunities for collaborative investigations are found within several HSC NIH-funded programs: the Clinical and Translational Science Center, the SpatioTemporal Modeling Center, the Center for Infectious Disease and Immunity, the Autophagy, Inflammation and Metabolism Center, the Center for Brain Recovery and Repair, the Interdisciplinary HPV Prevention Center, the New Mexico Center of Molecular Discovery and the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as with main campus faculty and with local organizations such as Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory. A new College of Population Health provides interesting possibilities for pathology-based epidemiology studies. The TriCore Research Institute provides additional opportunities for collaboration including Digital Pathology/Artificial Intelligence, Population Health, and device trials. Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Candidates must hold an MD, MD-PhD, DO, or equivalent degree and be Board Certified in Pathology, and have demonstrated expertise appropriate for appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor in UNM’s School of Medicine. The candidate must have administrative and leadership experience in an academic institution, be eligible for licensure in New Mexico, and must be eligible to work in the United States.

  • Strong record of excellence in education and educational innovation including successful development of educational and training programs for clinical and research trainees
  • Strong record of productivity in research to include federally-funded research experience
  • Success in creating and maintaining a positive learning environment
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine
  • Evidence of leadership and experience in managing a complex clinical, research, and educational enterprise
  • Demonstrated evidence of financial management, contract negotiation and driving strategic initiatives to successful outcomes
  • Strong record of personnel management experience with an emphasis on faculty recruitment, faculty development and mentoring for success
  • Experience working with multiple constituencies and a record of advocacy across all department mission areas
  • Evidence of commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a creative and collaborative vision for the future and to successfully bring it to fruition
