Position SummaryThe School of Engineering at theUniversity of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for the position of Chairof the Department of Nuclear Engineering. The successful candidate will beappointed at the level of Full Professor with tenure.

The Department offers an ABETaccredited B.S. degree, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Nuclear Engineering with M.S.level concentrations in Medical Physics and Radiation Protection Engineering.The current department faculty is comprised of four Full Professors, twoNational Laboratory Professors, one Associate Professor, three AssistantProfessors, one full time and one part time Lecturer.

Active research areas include: advancedreactor design, safety and thermal-hydraulics; space nuclear power; nuclearmaterials and fuels; radiation detection, instrumentation and diagnostics;nuclear security and safeguards; radiation transport, criticality safety, andhigh performance computing. Research and teaching facilities include anAGN-201R low-power teaching and training reactor; radiation measurements anddetection laboratory; thermal fluids laboratory with FLiBe loop, heat transferand critical heat flux facilities; thermal-hydraulics and energy conversionlaboratory; hot mechanical testing and microstructure characterization (dualbeam SEM/FIB) facility; molten lead loop facility; and high performancecomputing facilities.

Strong ties with Sandia NationalLaboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Air Force Research Laboratory,WIPP and URENCO USA in New Mexico, as well as Idaho National Laboratory throughthe department’s participation in the National University Consortium, provideexceptional opportunities for collaborative research and student internships.UNM is a member of the Sandia Academic Alliance that promotes collaborationthrough LDRD research partnerships and startup opportunities for early careerfaculty. UNM and Los Alamos National Laboratory recently signed anInstitutional Agreement that provides unique opportunities for collaborativeresearch through unprecedented access and joint appointments for both LANLstaff and UNM faculty. The department also has active research collaborationson advanced reactor technology with Westinghouse and Kairos Power.

Outstanding candidates with establishedrecords of accomplishment and reputation in nuclear science and engineering areencouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have recognized stature inthe NE community; have strong commitment to undergraduate and graduateeducation; be expected to continue to grow a vigorous and well-funded researchprogram and leverage the current faculty expertise in the Department, School ofEngineering, College of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Medicine; and totake advantage of UNM’s strong ties with the federal laboratories in the Stateto enhance the Department’s reputation and national visibility.

Applicants are required to hold anearned Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering or closely related discipline, have experiencecommensurate with a full professor or with equivalent industry or nationallaboratory experience and should have demonstrated leadership and exceptionalcommunication and interpersonal skills, and be able to articulate a progressivevision for education, research, and service commensurate with those of theSchool of Engineering and UNM.

UNM’s School of Engineering offersprograms in Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemicaland Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, andComputer Science at the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. levels. Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Nuclear Engineering or closely related field
  • Experience commensurate with full professor or equivalent industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recognized stature in the NE community
  • Strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education
  • Ability to establish a vigorous and well funded research program
  • Ability to leverage the current faculty expertise in Nuclear Engineering, School of Engineering, Arts & Sciences and School of Medicine
  • Demonstrated leadership and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Articulate a progressive vision for education, research, and service commensurate with those of the School of Engineering and the University
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
