Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is seeking applicants for a Charge (RN) Nurse position. This supervisory position oversees an RN and Medical Assistant team in the General Medicine area of the clinic, which includes episodic care, primary care, and some specialty care. The Charge Nurse position will primarily be a clinical position, complemented by some administrative responsibilities and will report to the Clinical Operations Director.

Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary health service available to all currently enrolled UNM students. SHAC is located North of Johnson Center and across from the Student Union Building. It is open Monday through Friday and is closed on all UNM holidays. Services include primary care, general medicine, medical specialty clinics, immunizations, pharmacy, physical therapy, lab and x-ray services, international travel health consults, and counseling services, as well as health education, prevention, and promotion.

The person in this position will:

  • Provide direct patient care in an outpatient setting, ensuring high-quality and compassionate service
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for nursing and medical assistant staff, supporting best practices and patient safety
  • Oversee patient assessment, treatments, and follow-up care in collaboration with physicians and other providers
  • Coordinate and oversee patient care/nursing triage activities in the clinic
  • Monitor patient flow to maintain efficiency and minimize wait times
  • Coordinate daily clinic staffing to ensure smooth scheduling and coverage
  • Manage staff assignments, timecards, and scheduling adjustments as needed
  • Support compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory standards
  • Facilitate communication between clinical staff, providers, and administration to address day-to-day clinic needs
  • Assist with onboarding, training, and annual competencies for new and existing nursing and Medical Assistant staff
  • Will conduct annual performance reviews with subordinate staff
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient experience and staff satisfaction

The schedule for this position will be Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, no weekends or holidays and no on-call.

Conditions of Employment
  • CPR Certified.
  • May be required to submit to annual TB and rubella screening.
  • UNM will provide Hepatitis vaccination, candidate may decline vaccination through declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in Nursing; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Certification/LicensureState of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the multistate privilege to practice compact with New Mexico.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional qualifications and experience in thefollowing are preferred:

  • Experience in an urgent care or emergency room setting.
  • Experience in an outpatient/ambulatory care clinic. 
  • Experience providing immunizations.
  • Experience hiring, scheduling and supervising a diverse team of nursing staff.
  • Experience successfully balancing clinical and management tasks.
  • Experience in student health/working with young adults/adolescents in a primary care setting.
  • Experience providing healthcare to a population with diverse ethnicity and sexual orientations.
  • Experience working with an electronic medical record system.
  • Computer skills: word processing and spreadsheet.
