Position Summary

Cleve Moler & MathWorks Chair in Mathematical and Engineering Software

The Department of Computer Science (CS) in the School of Engineering at the University of New Mexico (UNM) invites applications for the inaugural Cleve Moler & MathWorks Chair in Mathematical and Engineering Software - honoring Cleve Moler, a former UNM faculty and cofounder of MathWorks. The University is in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Chair is expected to engage in strategic and influential research and education related to mathematical and engineering software that includes but is not limited to MathWorks software. The position requires the development of an inspiring and impactful world-class research program, supervising graduate students, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. To accomplish this, the candidate must be a visionary researcher, energetic individual, strategic thinker, and generous collaborator.

We are particularly interested in outstanding candidates with expertise in Software Engineering, Numerical Methods, Large-Scale Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Graphics, and User Interfaces. However, researchers in all areas of computing are encouraged to apply. The appointment will be as a tenured Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

UNM CS is housed in the new state-of-the-art Farris Engineering Center. Our research and instruction uniquely push the research boundaries in Computer Science and at its intersection with other fields. As a department, we are recognized for being interdisciplinary, collegial, collaborative, open-minded, and family friendly. The department is committed to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate education, offering an ABET-accredited BS undergraduate program with 671 majors, and MS and PhD programs with about 100 graduate students. Our programs include a strong Computer Science core as well as opportunities for interdisciplinary education through cross-disciplinary programs such as the Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media (IFDM) program and the Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) graduate certificate program.

Our faculty excel in interdisciplinary research through numerous collaborations with other UNM schools, departments, and research centers such as the Center for Biomedical Engineering, the Center for Advanced Research Computing, and the UNM Health Sciences Center. Faculty research is funded by federal agencies including NSF, NIH, DARPA, ARO, NASA, and DOE. In addition, UNM has extensive ties and a long history of collaboration with nearby research organization such as Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), the Santa Fe Institute (SFI), and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).

UNM has a formal memorandum of understanding to allow for joint UNM faculty/LANL laboratory staff appointments and UNM is a member of the Sandia University Partnership Network. The successful candidate should be a catalyst to build and strengthen such intra-institutional and cross-institutional relationships.

UNM is the premier research university in the state of New Mexico. UNM is the only Carnegie-classified R1 (Very High Research Activity) university in the state and is a federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution. It is the only flagship university in the US where a majority of students identify as Hispanic/Latino or Native American. The UNM School of Engineering is partnering with ADVANCE at UNM, an NSF Institutional Transformation grant to help recruit and retain an excellent and diverse faculty. About 40% of UNM CS faculty are women, and 20% are from minority groups underrepresented in Computer Science. As such, UNM CS offers a unique opportunity to increase diversity in Computer Science.

UNM is located in Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico. Both the city and the state are ethnically diverse; have a rich culture, history, and landscape; enjoy fantastic weather; support a world class art community; and offer unparalleled opportunities for outdoor adventure, including hiking, biking, rock climbing, and skiing.
