Position Summary

The UNM Division of Human Resources is seeking a proactive, detail-oriented, and results-driven individual to join our team as a Communications and Outreach Specialist. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to internal and external communications that support HR’s mission to deliver exceptional service and resources to make employees’ lives better every day.

As a key member of the HR team, the selected candidate will work independently under the guidance of HR leadership to plan, develop, and execute a wide range of communications. This position is ideal for a creative, collaborative communicator with excellent writing and design skills, and a strong sense of initiative.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with HR division leadership to write and edit a variety of communications, including:
    • Campus-wide announcements
    • Internal and external newsletters
    • Internal and external presentations
    • Promotional materials such as brochures and recruitment materials
  • Manage and maintain the Division’s annual communication calendar, aligning messaging with key business cycle events (e.g., Open Enrollment, Performance Evaluations, Mandatory Training).
  • Support the planning and development of communication plans for the Division’s strategic initiatives.
  • Coordinate and provide administrative support for internal events such as HR Forums and HR staff meetings.
  • Collaborate with the HR Webmaster on website design, development, and content maintenance.
  • Provide support to the Office of the VP for HR with special events by creating and/or coordinating invitations, promotional website content, programs, and event coordination.
  • Closely collaborate with University Communication and Marketing to ensure alignment with communication best practices and compliance with university branding requirements.
  • Launch and manage social media presence on relevant social networking sites. Write, edit and manage social media related content.

The ideal candidate will possess outstanding communication skills (both written and verbal), have strong organizational and prioritization skills and will work closely with other members of the team to professionally represent HR to internal and external constituencies.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience with the following:

  • Excellent technical writing and editing skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex and nuanced topics to a general audience.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to accommodate shifting priorities while meeting time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Experience working independently to prioritize work and meet established deadlines.
  • Experience partnering with subject matter experts to create communication materials.
  • Advanced experience with relevant communication and design productivity tools, such as Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe InDesign, and Constant Contact.
  • Advanced skill and experience developing executive level presentations including researching skills for presentation content, creating graphs and use of imagery that is UNM brand appropriate.
  • Experience with the management of social media content in a business context.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, or another related field.
