Position Summary

The Community Engagement & Outreach Specialist plays a key role in advancing the mission of the Office of Community Engagement by developing, coordinating, and supporting partnerships between the university and diverse community stakeholders. This position is responsible for facilitating meaningful dialogue, identifying opportunities for collaboration, and ensuring that community engaged initiatives reflect shared values of equity, reciprocity, and impact. The specialist will support both internal and external communication efforts, helping to elevate community voices, foster inclusive participation, and promote awareness of engagement related research, teaching, and service throughout the region.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Build and sustain relationships with local organizations, community leaders, and university stakeholders to identify collaborative opportunities aligned with community-identified needs and university priorities.
  • Plan, coordinate, and support outreach activities such as public events, workshops, listening sessions, and service-learning initiatives that foster meaningful university community engagement.
  • Develop and maintain communications materials (e.g., newsletters, social media, reports) to promote programs, partnerships, and community impact stories.
  • Assist in tracking and assessing engagement outcomes, collecting data, and supporting evaluation efforts that inform strategic planning and reporting.
  • Support faculty, staff, and students in their community-engaged scholarship by connecting them with partners, funding opportunities, and capacity-building resources.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English orother relatable disciplines.

-Proven track record of building relations withcommunity leaders.

-Experience with the development ofcommunication materials on various platforms.

-Strong written and verbal communication skills.

-Understanding of the role of community engagement inacademic settings, particularly as related to UNM’s mission and public service.

-Experience with basic data collection, impact reporting, oroutreach assessment tools.
