The Division of Nephrology, within the Department of Internal Medicine, is seeking a full-time candidate who is a detail-oriented and results-driven individual to join our team as a Community Research Specialist.

The Community Research Specialist will be responsible for organizing and executing unusually complex and/or advanced clinical research assignments that are integrated in nature and require significant, in-depth knowledge of a specific area of health sciences research. The candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of protocols, procedures, and techniques; independently coordinate all day-to-day aspects of specific research assignments, and participates in the analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research findings. Additionally the candidate will provide technical oversight and instruction to lower level technologists, residents, interns, and/or visiting research staff, as appropriate to the position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs highly complex data acquisition, manipulation, reduction, and analysis within a specific area of health sciences research specialty.
  2. Compiles data and computes results, ensuring quality control and compliance with protocol, and provides initial analyses of results to researchers; makes substantive suggestions for improvements in techniques and interpretation, as appropriate.
  3. Routinely reports detailed study progress reports to internal and external collaborators; may provide suggestions for process improvement measures.
  4. Participates in experiment design; may develop and/or coordinate research protocols.
  5. Uses complex and/or advanced specialized statistical and scientific programs to process experimental data.
  6. Selects, modifies, and/or adapts equipment or procedures to specific project requirements.
  7. May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
  8. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  9. Participates in continuing education activities.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Nephrology - SPECIFIC:

  • Coordinates implementation and execution of study protocol, and oversees all aspects of the provision of patient care to participants, in compliance with protocol requirements.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of protocols, procedures and techniques.
  • Recruit, evaluate and instruct clinical research subjects and volunteers.
  • Develop logistics and design flow sheet.
  • Will interact regularly with faculty and clinical staff regarding the individual project(s) and provide reporting as required.
  • Complete start up initiatives as required by the individual project(s).
  • Make sure grants are executed within confines of the FDA and sponsor requirements.
  • Assist with IRB submissions.
  • Provide technical oversight and instruction to research coordinators, technicians and other research staff.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience collecting, compiling and analyzing program activity data;
  • Recruiting patients to participate in research studies
  • Coordinating clinical trials and performing clinical trial study visits and tasks;
  • Use and understanding of medical terminology;
  • Preparing applications and other documents for submission to an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or direct experience in IRB Administration
  • Experience with phlebotomy, vital signs, and electrocardiogram;
  • Ability to work flexible hours and ability to travel, as required by the study.
