Position Summary

This is a Community-Based Research Specialist position with the UNM College of Pharmacy Substance Use Research and Education (SURE) Center. The SURE Center is leading several clinical studies with patients affected by substance use and substance use disorders as well as outreach educational activities in the state. The Center is also involved in large multi-site national studies, including the NIDA Southwest Clinical Trials Node and the HEALthy Brain and Child Development Study. Under the general supervision of the Project Specialist and the Principal Investigator, the incumbent will be primarily responsible for supporting clinical research studies conducted by the SURE Center. We are looking for a highly motivated, detailed oriented individual who is excited to work with vulnerable patient populations.

The Community-Based Research Specialist manages and coordinates the on-site establishment and execution of research and associated administrative protocols within the defined parameters of a funded clinic/hospital- or community-based research studies; establishes and maintains community relationships; engages and recruits research participants; schedules, coordinates, and performs study-related procedures, including administration of structured questionnaires and collection of biological specimens. Research Specialist also assists with maintain compliance with the UNM policy and procedures (including human subjects and biohazard regulations), collects and prepares data, and conducts a variety of standardized tests and analyses in accordance with detailed protocol and procedural specifications; participates as appropriate in the interpretation of field research data and in the publication and/or presentation of results. He/she will work closely with the study consultants and co-Investigators, laboratory personnel, and research nurses. The position requires ability to handle a flexible work schedule, to include some evenings and weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Screen and determine eligibility of potential research subjects at clinics.
  • Administer structured patient interviews.
  • Collect, process, bank and catalog biological specimens according to established protocol as appropriate to the specific objectives of the research study.
  • Travel to UNMH off-site clinics in Albuquerque, NM.
  • Plan and organize day-to-day on-site research activities and resolve procedural and logistical problems as appropriate to the timely completion of research activities.
  • Develop and/or contribute to the publication and/or presentation of results, and the development of grant proposals.
  • Develop and maintain manual and electronic files and databases related to project activities. Assist with preparation of data summaries, QA/QC activities with the electronic databases, and contribute to progress reports as appropriate.
  • May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and volunteers rotating in the laboratory.
  • Maintain a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art research techniques.
  • Establish and maintain community relationships through face-to-face, telephone and email contact; prepare and deliver project introductory and informational presentations to community members.
  • Assist with maintaining with IRB documentation for compliance.

Conditions of Employment
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • At least 6 months of experience that can be demonstrated to be applicable to the duties listed in the job description.
  • Proficiency in oral and written Spanish.
  • Prior experience in screening, recruiting and interviewing patients for a research study.
  • Prior experience working with UNM clinical (physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, receptionists) and laboratory personnel.
  • Training and prior experience in collecting and processing biological samples.
  • Experience with IRB/compliance and/or recordkeeping for quality assurance and quality control
  • Experience with qualitative research and/or experience with data management/reporting
