The Division of Hematology/Oncology within the UNM Cancer Center seeks a well-qualified individual to oversee the day-to-day programmatic and administrative support to the principal investigator as part of a clinical research project in a collaborative team environment. This position will support faculty in senior leadership roles to coordinate clinical research activities and will include identifying and assessing potential patient participants and educating patients and their families in the research studies. The research coordinator will oversee data entry, data integrity and overall maintenance of the Hairy Cell Leukemia Patient Data Registry, working closely with different internal and external agencies and the clinical research office on IRB submissions and serve as liaison with research teams across the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology and UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. A high level of expertise with database components, data collection and extraction and design and management of hospital interface systems is necessary, along with the strategic planning and engagement necessary to ensure the success of the programmatic initiatives. The successful applicant will be a central resource and requires excellent written skills, data collection standards and patient care in a clinical setting and strict adherence to protocols and record-keeping excellence. Budgetary accountability and recordkeeping in compliance of UNM policies and procedures is essential. A keen desire and the ability to work well with faculty and staff alike while operating in a team environment is key to the success of this position
The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 124 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1,610 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 696 patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The 132 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $34.5 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects and published 301 high quality publications. Promoting economic development, they filed more than 30 new patents since FY16, and since 2010, have launched 11 new biotechnology start-up companies. Scientists associated with the UNMCCC Cancer Control & Disparities have conducted more than 60 statewide community-based cancer education, prevention, screening, and behavioral intervention studies involving more than 10,000 New Mexicans. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 230 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
1) Previous experience as a research coordinator in a clinical environment
2) Proficiency in written correspondence, report generation and database maintenance
3) Experience with writing and/or editing manuscripts, grants and/or proposals
4) Experience with records maintenance, budgets, purchasing and reimbursements in compliance with policies and procedures
5) Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
6) Experience with UNM’s Banner financial system
