The UNM-Valencia Upward BoundProgram is seeking an On-Call Counselor/Social Worker. This is a grant-funded, ten-hour weekly position with current available funding through 08/31/2024.

The Counselor Social Worker willwork as a team member with other program staff, responsible for providingpersonal, academic, and career counseling for 55 high school students in thiscollege preparatory program. The candidate will provide individual and groupcounseling with emphasis on skill building that will facilitate student successin their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher educationpursuits. The position will provide workshops that focus on the topics ofacademic and personal goals setting, time management, study skills, substanceabuse prevention, communication skills, social skills, substance abuseprevention, and communication skills. The Counselor will also completeindividual education/success plans and updates with each of the students.

Located about 30 miles south ofAlbuquerque in rural Valencia County, The University of New Mexico-ValenciaCampus is a two-year branch campus of The University of New Mexico whichfunctions as a community college in the region and is designated a HispanicServing Institution. With an emphasis on teaching excellence, ValenciaCampus offers academic transfer programs, technical vocational programs, AdultBasic Education, and Dual Credit High School/College courses to Valencia andSocorro Counties. The faculty and staff serve a student body ofapproximately 2,400 students per semester. UNM has earned the platinum-leveldistinction from FamilyFriendlyNM.org for its workplace policies.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must maintain certification status.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or directly related field; at least 6 months of directly related experience which may include internship and/or practicum.Certification/LicensureNM licensure as LPCC, LPC, LMHC, LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent level, OR licensed out of state and eligible for NM licensure.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting.
  • Experience performing career/academic assessments.
  • Experience planning and implementing life skill/career development curriculum.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (speak, read, andwrite)
