We are seeking a talented and empathetic Senior Counselor/Social Worker to join our dynamic team and make a meaningful impact on the lives of our patients and their families. In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to work across two divisions, providing comprehensive counseling and social work services to support pediatric patients and their families through challenging medical journeys.

As a Senior Counselor/Social Worker specializing in Endocrinology, you will collaborate closely with transgender youth and their families, providing comprehensive support and access to resources. Your responsibilities will include fostering a safe and nurturing environment, facilitating discussions surrounding gender identity and expression with parents or guardians, and recommending suitable resources and support networks.

Additionally, as a Senior Counselor/Social Worker focusing on Pulmonary care, you will primarily provide support for the Cystic Fibrosis program. You will also offer assistance to patients with uncomplicated general and specialized needs, such as those requiring ventilation or tracheostomy care, within pediatric pulmonary populations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide individual and family counseling services to pediatric patients with pulmonary and endocrine conditions.
  2. Provide individualized support and counseling to transgender youth.
  3. Assess psychosocial needs and develop personalized care plans to support patients and families throughout their treatment journey.
  4. Create a safe and supportive environment for transgender youth to express themselves.
  5. Develop and implement intervention plans to address the emotional, social, and psychological needs of transgender youth.
  6. Collaborate closely with medical providers, interdisciplinary teams, and community resources to ensure holistic patient care.
  7. Advocate for patients and families to access necessary support services and resources.
  8. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences to discuss patient progress and treatment plans.
  9. Facilitate support groups and educational workshops for patients, families, and caregivers.
  10. Maintain accurate and confidential patient records in accordance with professional standards and regulatory requirements.
  11. Stay current on best practices and evidence-based interventions in pediatric counseling and social work.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check when working in a child classroom setting.
  • CPR and Basic First Aid Certificate may be a requirement for some positions in this classification.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • If located at the UNM Children's Campus, successful candidate must pass a comprehensive post-offer, pre-employment criminal and New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) fingerprint background check, and a continued successful status will be verified by periodic future background checks.
  • Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
  • May be subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status, if applicable.
  • Must maintain certification status.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or an equivalent field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Certification/Licensure: Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) or equivalent OR Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or equivalent OR licensure pending, as documented by temporary license.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with diverse populations.
  2. Knowledge of pediatric pulmonary and endocrine conditions preferred.
  3. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
