Position Summary

Do you enjoy managing the complexities of medical practice with the challenges of an academic setting? The Department of Pathology, at the UNM School of Medicine, is seeking a talented professional to serve as the administrative lead, in partnership with the Department Chair and the administrative team, in the operational management of the department. The Department Administrator oversees all administrative functions, including finance, clinical practice, human resources, medical education, and facilities, and engages in strategic planning. 

The Department Administrator will manage the clinical academic department with responsibility for more than 150 faculty, staff, and trainees and an annual budget exceeding $20 million.  Reporting to the Department Chair and serving as member of Executive Leadership Committees, the administrator will oversee support systems and personnel for teaching, patient care, and research programs; serve as primary liaison and manager for programmatic initiatives; supervise the core administrative team; manage fiscal activities; negotiate clinical contracts; participate in strategic planning and implementation; develop, recommend and execute department-wide policies and operational procedures; allocate and upgrade facilities, equipment and information systems; and coordinate fundraising initiatives.

As a leader in the department, the administrator will facilitate the department’s administrative, clinical, education and research missions. Establishing and maintaining key partnerships with University Hospital, UNM Medical Group, Sandoval Regional Medical Center, NM Veterans Medical Center, TriCore Reference Laboratories and colleagues within the UNM community are key to the ongoing success of the Department of Pathology.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 4 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years experience in a leadership role in an academic medical center.
  • Experience in senior level financial management, overseeing funds flow, projecting financial trends and communicating financial reports.
  • Experience in human resources management, including hiring, performance reviews, performance management, team leadership and training.
  • Experience with research administration, pre- and post-award management, and compliance with regulatory agencies for funding.
  • Experience with clinical funds management, including patient service collections and clinical contracting, preferable related to anatomic/clinical pathology, medical directorships and clinical laboratory services.
  • Experience with UNM Banner Finance, Salary Planner, Budget Planner, and related applications.
  • Experience working with external organizations on national trends in pathology services and/or and research.
  • Ability to research, collect, analyze and compile data and develop management reports, to include trend analysis and business planning.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
