Position Summary

The Department of Psychiatry andBehavioral Sciences is seeking a highly skilled and visionary Administrativeand Strategic Leader to direct and manage the operations of a large,diverse clinical department within the UNM School of Medicine. The successfulcandidate will serve as a key strategic partner to senior faculty and staff,driving the development and implementation of innovative administrative andoperational programs to support the department’s Clinical, Research, Education,and Community Engagement missions.

In this critical role, the DepartmentAdministrator (DA) will oversee clinical practice management, financialoperations, grant administration, human resources, facility management, andgeneral department administration. The DA will collaborate with the Chair andother senior faculty as a full member of the department's leadership team,contributing to integrated strategic and operational decision-making.

Key responsibilities includemanaging faculty affairs such as compensation, performance evaluation, andproductivity metrics, while ensuring compliance with institutional andregulatory requirements. The DA will oversee budgetary planning, fiscalmanagement, and the development of revenue-generating initiatives to supportdepartmental growth.
Additionally, this position requiresdirecting internal and external communications, developing marketing strategiesfor service initiatives, and fostering a cooperative and collaborative workenvironment. Representing the department to University leadership and externalstakeholders, the leader will establish and implement strategies to enhanceorganizational goals, operational efficiency, and innovation.

We are looking for a candidate withdemonstrated leadership, advanced analytical, communication, and organizationalskills, as well as expertise in clinical operations, medical practicemanagement, and academic faculty administration. The ideal candidate willpossess a strong ability to build relationships, foster collaboration, andguide the department’s strategic vision for continued success. The selectedcandidate will report directly to the Department Chair.

Key Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with a diverse range of constituencies.
  • Knowledge of medical academic, clinical, research, and regulatory compliance practices.
  • Experience with provider credentialing, faculty productivity programs, and performance metrics.
  • Expertise in financial and operational analysis, strategic planning, and policy development.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex administrative programs, human resources initiatives, and marketing strategies.
    Knowledge of medical faculty compensation programs, grant management, and clinical operations within an academic environment.
  • Proven ability to foster a collaborative work environment and develop successful cross-departmental relationships.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Healthcare, Business, or PublicAdministration.
  • Demonstrated experience in senior-level financialmanagement, preferably in higher education, including strategic financialplanning, financial analysis, and developing and managing a business modeldriven budget.
  • Experience in UNM faculty and staff hiring processes.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising, coaching andmentoring a large and diverse administrative and professional staff.
  • Experience working directly with leadership in coreoffices such as UNMMG, UNMH, Contracts and Grants, SOM Finance, HR, AcademicAffairs, Faculty Hiring, Clinical Affairs, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in overseeing sponsored research,clinical trials and a variety of awards and professional service contracts toinclude budgets, pre- and post-award processes and compliance.
  • Exceptional communication skills including experiencewith analyzing data and preparing and presenting narrative and statisticalreports.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing high functioning,collegial relationships within a large organization with diverse interests;program planning and evaluation; mediation and conflict resolution;facilitation and negotiation; taking calculated risks; and employee developmentand mentoring.
