The School of Medicine seeks to recruit a faculty member to serve in a full-time capacity (1.0 FTE) as the Director of the Medical Student Cognitive Skills Program, this is an open rank/open track position. This position is available beginning January 1, 2019 although a later date could be negotiated as needed for the successful applicant.
Summary of Position:
The Director of the Medical Student Cognitive Skills Program, reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, will oversee and manage all facets of this program for medical and PA students and will be a direct provider of student services with specific responsibilities as follows:
Supervise activities of instructional personnel and clerical staff providing cognitive and academic skills services.
Recruit and train additional personnel as needed to maintain optimal program services.
Conduct diagnostic interviews and consultative activities for medical students and PA students served by the Cognitive Skills Program in the areas of learning and test taking strategies, time management, and preparation for licensure examinations and board certification.
Plan and participate in orientation and board review programs.
Plan and coordinate tutorial sessions in basic science subjects including recruitment, training and supervision of tutors.
Maintain small library of materials for basic science and clinical courses for use in individual student sessions.
Selectively attend classes, seminars, tutorials, and other educational activities to gain thorough exposure to current educational content and methodology.
Review required and recommended course materials, including books, websites, practice examinations, and other media for effective student assistance.
Maintain contact and be a resource to basic science and clinical faculty on learning issues and maintaining an optimal environment for learning
Attend meetings and consultative activities regarding student retention.
Interact with others offering student support/wellness programs, e.g., Student Affairs Deans, Office of Physician and Student Wellness and the Office of Assessment and Learning.
Serve as an advocate for students seeking ADA accommodations in working with the School of Medicine ADA liaison.
Participate in developing the annual budget for the Cognitive Skills Program.
Keep records of budget transactions to maintain fiscal stability.
Participate in scholarly activities including membership in professional organizations, presentations at medical education conferences, and publications.
Collaborate in research efforts regarding student performance and retention.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Advanced degree (MS, PhD or EdD) in educational or cognitive psychology.
Experience in medical education or other professional degree programs with demonstrated success in developing, coordinating or implementing academic support and cognitive skills services.
Demonstrated leadership, management and organizational skills.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
Demonstrated experience and success in educational scholarship.
Experience with providing support to learners with diverse backgrounds.
