Position Summary | The New Mexico Sentencing Commission (NMSC) through the University of New Mexico (UNM) seeks applicants for the Executive Director position. NMSC is a state funded commission housed at UNM Institute for Social Research. The Commission is made up of 27 representatives from the criminal and juvenile justice systems, including members of the Executive and Judicial branches, legislators’ appointees, law enforcement officials, criminal defense attorneys, and citizens. The commission serves as a policy resource to the state providing both research and legal analysis. Funding for the position is available through 6/30/2025. Under supervision and direction of the Governor’s appointed NM Sentencing Commission Chair, the Executive Director runs the day-to-day operations of the commission’s nine staff members. The Executive Director provides strategic leadership in the establishment and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and programs, and manages all administrative, financial, and contractual functions associated with the commission’s activities. Specific responsibilities pursuant to 9-3-10D NMSA 1978 include: Coordinates staffing resources for the full commission and its Executive, Reform, Juvenile, Legislative and Grant subcommittees. Acts as the commission’s primary point of contact with the legislature, judiciary and executive agencies by providing representation and expertise in criminal and juvenile justice policy and legislative issues. Oversees the commission’s research work. Facilitates the sharing of criminal justice data in coordination with the Administrative of the Courts Judicial Information Division. Manages the commission’s approximately 4-million-dollar budget, which includes oversight of 30+ grants awarded pursuant to the Crime Reduction Grant Act. |

Minimum Qualifications | Master's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. |
Preferred Qualifications | J.D. and/or Master's degree with 5-10 years’ experience in the criminal and juvenile justice areas. |
