The School of Architecture and Planning is seeking a Shop Supervisor/Fabrication Lab Supervisor to provide support in the Fabrication Lab. The Shop Supervisor will report directly to the Fabrication Lab Coordinator. The Fabrication Lab is a critical component of the teaching and research missions of the three academic programs within the School of Architecture and Planning: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Community & Regional Planning. The School of Architecture and Planning is housed in George Pearl Hall, designed by renowned architect, Antoine Predock, and is located on UNM’s main campus.
Under the direct supervision and mentorship of the Fabrication Lab Coordinator, the Shop Supervisor will be involved in a wide range of projects with varying levels of complexity. Primarily, the Shop Supervisor will assist the Fabrication Lab Coordinator and will have oversight of the Fabrication Lab during evening and weekend hours of operation. The job responsibilities will include: providing technical guidance and support to student users; operating digital and analogue machines, tools, equipment and software including laser cutters, CNC routers, table saws and other shop tools; conducting workshops to train student and faculty users; implementing safety policies and procedures; maintaining equipment and tools; cleaning the Lab; and assisting with building and/or furnishings maintenance and repair.
The Shop Supervisor will also monitor the work of student employees and will supervise various shifts of the Fabrication Lab operating hours. This is a full-time, one-year term appointment, renewable depending upon available funding and organizational need.
The successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Work may, on occasion, involve exposure to unusual elements, such as dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. May require physical effort including lifting up to 25 pounds and some extended periods of standing or walking.
|Conditions of Employment|
High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in Architecture or related field
Ability to communicate technical information to student users
Broad experience using analogue, laser and digital fabrication tools
Knowledge of modeling/graphic design software programs
Experience and capability using heavy machinery and shop tools
Experience using a variety of fabrication materials
Previous experience working in a fabrication lab or similar environment
