Position Summary

The Center for Development and Disability (CDD), established in 1990, is New Mexico's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service. These centers, authorized by the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act, build the capacities of states and communities to respond to the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

CDD’s Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities Division is seeking individuals for multiple part-time Family Specialist positions.

Under direct supervision, family specialists respond to specific parent requests for information. Based on parent inquiry, the family specialist gathers information on local resources regarding autism spectrum disorders, considers support needs of local family members, assists in providing community training in the area of autism spectrum disorders, and offers technical assistance to service providers in the area of autism. Occasional travel is required for the position.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Specialized experiential background requirements may apply for certain positions in this classification, depending on specific program objectives.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 4 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Parent of child, youth or adult with autism spectrum disorder.
  • Fluent in Spanish (oral and written)
  • Experience in working across a number of systems related to ASD within New Mexico.
  • Ability to travel within the state.
  • Certified Family Peer Support Worker or willing to take training and exam within 12 months.
Additional RequirementsPosition requires passing a background check with fingerprinting. Occasional travel within the state will be required.
