Position Summary

UNM's Department of Pediatrics is committed to providing the children of New Mexico with comprehensive family-centered healthcare that is unequaled in the state and region. We are seeking a full-time or part-time Senior Genetic Counselor for the Division of Genetics and Dysmorphology to work with the metabolic team in the care of patients with inborn errors of metabolism, abnormal newborn screens, general genetics and outreach clinics.

This position will have the following responsibilities:

  • Assess family histories, counsel patients and/or families in cases of metabolic/genetic disorders or birth defects, and assist families to comprehend the diagnosis, probable course of the disorder, and available management strategies
  • Assist families to make the best possible adjustment to the disorder in an affected family member and/or to the risk of recurrence of that disorder
  • Provide mental health counseling to families and/or refer individuals and families to support services and funding agencies
  • Document patient charts, develop follow-up recommendations for patients and maintain appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality
  • Case management services including laboratory analysis, imaging studies, and specialty referrals
  • Develop and present educational and related programs as appropriate
  • Teach and supervise training activities of residents and/or other health care professionals.
  • Perform associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include patient scheduling and obtaining insurance prior authorization

  • Subject to credentialing process; must maintain credentialed status.
  • Must maintain certification status.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.Certification/LicensureBoard Certification as a Genetic Counselor.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
