Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the incumbent will be involved in operational activities of the clinical studies conducted by the PI's research team at the University of New Mexico, College of Pharmacy. Clinical studies are conducted among pregnant women and their newborns and will require the incumbent to be comfortable working with vulnerable populations including patients with a history of substance abuse. The incumbent will work closely with UNM affiliated providers to administer structured interviews for patients enrolled in the study. The incumbent will also coordinate study-related procedures, including data entry and data management, collection of biological specimens, including blood, urine, and placenta. He/she will work closely with the study consultants and co-investigators, laboratory personnel, and hospital personnel. The incumbent will also be responsible for processing and submitting paperwork related to human research, including UNM HRRC (Human Research Review Committee) applications, modifications, and closure reports. This position will require rotated weekends and holidays coverage of research activities. The selected candidate will be eligible to receive over time or compensatory time.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer structured patient interviews with pregnant women at UNMH prenatal care clinics and with patients during the hospital stay after labor and delivery.
  • Assist with data entry of study documents and data management.
  • Abstract study specific information from patient's electronic medical records.
  • Collects, processes, ships, and banks or catalogs biological specimens according to established protocol as appropriate to the specific objectives of the research study.
  • Plans and organizes day-to-day on-site research activities, and resolves procedural and logistical problems as appropriate to the timely completion of research activities.
  • Monitors and maintains inventories of equipment and supplies for day-to-day study purposes as required, within budget parameters.
  • Assist with contacting contract labs to ensure agreement between specimens and results.
  • Travel to off-site clinics in the greater Albuquerque area will be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Outstanding communication skills, ability to conduct structured patient interviews.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and standards for the handling and processing of biological specimens.
  • Knowledge of field research and data collection principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Ability to collect and process research data and accurately record findings.
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control.
  • Must posses a current valid Drivers License.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.
Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with vulnerable populations, including pregnant women and newborns.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects.
  • Prior research experience, especially with multi-faceted clinical studies.
  • Master's Degree.
  • Prior experience with collecting, processing, and analyzing human biological specimens.
  • Prior experience working with UNM nurses and laboratory personnel.
  • Prior experience with data entry and data management.
  • Prior experience with electronic medical record review and abstractions.
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and deadline-oriented environment.
