University of New Mexico’s College of Education and Human Sciences
Lecturer II/III Faculty Position in Special Education Teacher Preparation
Starting in August 2025

The University of New Mexico College of Education and Human Sciences, Department of Special Education, invites applications for Lecturer II/III faculty position in Special Education Teacher Preparation, for the Dual License Program, at the Gallup Branch Campus. Candidates will have experience and expertise in preK-12 special education classroom teaching.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidates will be expected to supervise students in field placements, advise students, and teach courses specific to the preparation of special educators to serve the diverse needs of students with disabilities in inclusive settings. The faculty member will collaborate with colleagues in the Special Education Department and assist with the coordination of the Dual License program. This latter will include involvement in the recruitment and evaluation of potential cooperating teachers and collaborative decision making regarding the placement of teacher candidates, updating program participants’ progress, and ongoing collaboration with our program partners in conjunction to the Special Education Department faculty. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to diversity through their teaching, advisement, and service. Successful candidates must be committed to working with broadly diverse student and community populations.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree in Special Education or a closely related field
  • Hold an active teaching license in Special Education
  • Minimum three years’ experience teaching students with a wide range of special education needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Robust and current formal academic preparation in teacher preparation in inclusive settings from historically marginalized communities.
  • Extensive preK-12 teaching experience working with students with a wide range of special education needs from historically marginalized communities in inclusive settings.
  • Excellence or potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate licensure courses.
  • Potential for excellence in supervision of teacher candidates, including those from historically marginalized communities.
  • Potential for excellence in coordinating a special education teacher preparation program.
  • Evidence of successful collaborations, especially with historically marginalized communities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
