Position SummaryThe Department of Teacher Education, Educational Leadership, and Policy (TEELP) at the University of New Mexico, College of Education, invites applications, expressions of interest, and nominations for the position of Lecturer III in Reading/Literacy Education. The position may commence as early as August 2020, but shall remain open until filled.

The UNM College of Education, comprised of five academic departments, is a future-oriented, dynamic professional school organized to reflect the following values: Advocacy, Building Professional Identities, Collaboration, Building School/University Partnerships, Diversity and Social Justice, Interdisciplinary Inquiry/Scholarship, and Teaching, Learning and Leadership.

The Lecturer III with specialization in reading/literacyeducation, is expected to teach undergraduates and graduates in ElementaryEducation licensure programs to support teacher candidates in their fieldexperience in order to build competence, care, cultural responsiveness,self-reflection, collegiality and evidence-based assessment. The Lecturer IIIin Reading/Literacy Education is expected to support university-schoolcollaborations; develop and teach in undergraduate and graduate programs, andprovide service to the program and department. This faculty member will also beexpected to participate in enhancing the coherence and effectiveness of the reading/literacycourse sequence and the department’s general teacher preparation programs.

In addition to teaching readingand literacy education methods courses that require organizing student participationin school settings, the lecturer is also expected to participate in departmentalprogram development and assessment, and some committee work. The duties associatedwith this position require interactions with university faculty, teachers,teacher candidates, and students in elementary and middle schools.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

  • Earned doctorate in reading or literacy education, or closely related field by the appointed start date no later than August 2020
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience teaching reading/language arts at the elementary level with culturally and linguistically-diverse students
  • One year or more of supervising field experience, clinical teaching practice or related area

Preferred requirements:

  • Evidence of excellence or potential for excellence in teaching reading/literacy education methods courses at a post-secondary level
  • Evidence of successful post-secondary on-line instruction in reading/language arts
  • 3 years of teaching experience in grades K-3
  • Experience building partnerships with schools, communities in support of teacher preparation
  • Theoretical knowledge of and practical experience with early literacy instruction, literacy assessment, multimodalities and critical literacies
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
